What are some other names for a brochure?

Some people call a brochure a 'pamphlet' or 'leaflet'. These is synonymous with the more popular term brochure. However, others may refer to brochures as 'flyers', 'booklets' or even 'postcards', those these terms have their own distinct meanings and are incorrect.
Conversely, a minority of people might refer to all commercial or informative printed collateral as 'brochures', but this is due to the dialect of the speaker as brochures do have a distinct definition.

What is a brochure?

A brochure is a single folded piece of printed paper without any binding. The fold can be of any number of patterns and the paper can be any size but is always a single sheet, most often printed on both sides. The structure of the brochure is meant to create a content flow and a more durable compact and smaller size for convenience of both the reader and the distributor.

What is the difference between a brochure and a booklet?

A booklet requires a form of binding (most commonly staples). An 8 page booklet, for example, is to bi-folded sheets stitched together on the fold.

What is the difference between a brochure and a flyer or postcard?

Brochures connotate a fold, whereas the terms 'flyer' and 'postcard' do not. Of these terms, interchanging 'flyer' and 'brochure' is more common, however a brochure is simply a flyer that has been folded.

A postcard on the other hand is usually a thicker stock like a cardstock that is left flat. It is rare that the terms 'postcard' and 'brochure' are used interchangeable. Postcards are something of a misnomer in their own right, as the term is derived from the Postal Service and is a specific class of mail according to their database.

As you can see the terms in the printing industry are very, very flexible and it can be confusing!

Do your brochures come folded?

Yes. If you buy a brochure with a specific fold pattern the price for use to fold the entire order is included. They will ship folded. However, we also allow you to order flat printing, and that is, as mentioned above, really a flyer. We include the unfolded option on this page for the convenience of those who call flyers "brochures". But what are brochures anyways but folded flyers? ....That's one for the philosophers to figure.

Do you score you brochures before folding?

Most papers require scoring, so yes. As a rule we score all our brochure orders before folding. Our bindery uses combo machines that score and fold at the same time.

Will the brochures crack on the folds?

No, because we score the brochures to minimize or avoid cracking altogether. Our folds have a crisp, clean look.

How do I prepare art for a folded piece?

There are two ways to approach your brochure design and layout.

Most commonly graphic artists will do the design and layout at the same time by selecting a page or canvas size the size that the brochure will be flat. Then they use one our templates or mark the folds in another way. Thus they can design the elements, type and perform the layout simultaneously. Technically this is called designing spreads (sides of a sheet).

Alternatively one can build each panel of a fold on it's own. For example, if one had a 3 panel brochure, they could design a page (or 2 if printing both sides) sized to each panel and end up with 3 (or 6) designs. The layout would then be performed separately. In this scenario we could do the layout for you.

Where are the templates?

These are the templates for premade sizes. However, you have have noticed that we allow you to enter your own dimensions. In that case you'll either have to request some templates from us, adapt one of our templates to your custom size, or follow the basic rule of 0.125 outside bleed, 0.125 inside content/safety margin, and mark your own folds and we'll either adjust your design before the press or adjust out folders to your design.

Artwork Prep General Guidelines

You may upload your artwork or email us files or links to your art files. The important thing is simply to get your artwork files to us. We do not require you to do it in any particular manner. All artwork is reviewed for accuracy and quality by trained personnel prior to printing. Artwork will be proofed with you if necessary, if we need your input, or if you request a proof.

Artwork Preparation guidelines:

- Bleed: 1/8 (0.125) inches on all edges.
- Content Margin ("safe zone"): 1/8 (0.125) inches from trim.
- Filetypes: PDF preferred. Other files may be accepted.

Saddle Booklets
- Filetypes: Multipage PDF preferred. Straight pages, not spreads. Other files may be accepted.
- NOTE: Saddlestitch booklets do not need bleed on the inside edge. This may interfere with spreads if it is the case.

Perfect Bound Booklets
- Gutter between pages is required.
